Exline,
Iowa. Town history notes. |
|
Early settlers lived
in the vicinity of what is now the town of
Exline
for many years before the town was started. In the early 1840's Michael
Caldwell and his half brother, Anderson C. Caldwell, were one of the
first families to arrive in this area. Michael Caldwell had a son,
Jeremiah, who was born here in 1847. The surrounding township of
Caldwell was named for these early pioneers.
The first person born in the vicinity was Elizabeth Stevens, the
daughter of F.A. Stevens. This occurred in April of 1846. The first
school was held in a log cabin on the F.A. Stevens farm, with D.T.
Stevens holding classes in 1849.
The first place of worship was "God's Barn". It was built of logs,
near where the current church, on the east end of Exline, now stands.
People would travel from miles around to attend.

Town Name |
|
David Exline was born in Jackson County, Ohio, on August 27, 1823. He
came to Iowa in 1865 and settled near the town of Orleans, northeast of
Moulton, Appanoose County, Iowa. He engaged in merchandising there until
August of 1866. At that time he purchased an interest in a store and
Robley's Mill and moved to Coal Hollow, 2 miles east of the present day
town of Exline.
By the early 1870's the railroad began to be built through the
area. By 1874 David Exline had the land platted. In 1877 permission to
establish a post office was eventually granted, following a failed
attempt a year earlier. By 1878 Sarah E. Price was in office as the new
Post Master.
The new post office was named in honor of its most prominent
citizen, David Exline. The railroad followed suit and named its station
there, Exline, and the town was begun.
After his first wife, Sarah, died he married Mary Ann Garr; when
she died in 1899, he married Elsie Benefield. David Exline died June 6,
1913 in Exline, Iowa, the town that was named after him.
